Hey, I hope you guys can help me with this, I've been spending a lot of time trying to figure this out: Why do Astronauts lei during Shuttel start?

To distribute their blood evenly.
If they were placed upright, all their blood would be pushed into their legs due to the gravity of acceleration.

lei? you mean lie? Astronaut lie on their backs because the space shuttle takes off vertically. It is reusable space-craft that can land as that of an airplane does. So basically they lay on the backs because if they were flying horizontally they would be sitting up like in a normal airplane. does that make sense?

I read some where that they lei* down because that way they would get better blood flow to there brain. since most blood flows downwards and they are going up in a high speed, it's hard for heart to provide blood to the brain.
