It depends what state you live in. Check the pic in the link below, which labels what states it is illegal to own piranhas in to see if they are legal in your state.

That depends where you're at. in some places, countries, states it is illegal and in some it isnt. In India it isnt illegal and so I keep 8 piranhas in my 8' tank.

In many states it is.
Hopefully they would know the local regulations at a pet store and not sell them if it is illegal, but there are no guarantees there. Try contacting your local Animal Control or Fish and Freshwater Game office to get the regulations for your area.

Contact your State Department of Conservation,or what ever it's called there.Florida and California prohibit Piranha and a lot of other fish,too. Green Snakeheads being one example.-------PeeTee

It depends on the state that you live in. Some states it is just fine. you can buy them at local pet stores just like guppies. In others they have certian rule/regulations on different pets.
