m/s means metres per second - it is a measure of speed or velocity
m/s^2 mean metres per second per second, or metres per second squared - it is a measure of acceleration
(we can consider gravity to be acceleration toward the Earth [or Moon, or whatever])

Gravity is 9.8 m/s2, not 8.9....at least it was when I was a kid....maybe global warming has changed it?

m/s means meters per second.
8.9m/s2 is an acceleration of some sort...
if it was 8.9m/s it would be concidered a velocity
THE FOLLOWING ARE FORMULAS THAT MIGHT HELP:
1. speed=distance divided by change of time better know as v=d/delta T
2. velocity=speed divided by change of time better known as
_ V=V/ delta T (velocity is represented by a V with a line overit)
3. acceleration= change of velocity divided by change of time better known as A=delta V divided by delta T
