Electricity is sold in Kilowatt-hours, which is the amount of energy represented by a load that draws 1000 watts for an hour. 1000 watts is about what a hair dryer uses, so imagine a hair dryer running for an hour.
*
A kilowatt-hour will cost anywhere between about 3 cents and 20 cents, depending where you live, and what time of day it is. I own an electric car. Here in Detroit I can charge at a special overnight rate of only 3 cents per KWH.
*
An old electric car (like mine, built in 1981) gets about 2 miles per kilowatt-hour. A newer car like the Toyota RAV4 EV (built in the late 1990s) gets about 4 miles per KWH. I don't have figures on the very latest EVs, but they should perform as well or better.
*
That means the cost of electricity for driving an EV is somewhere around a penny per mile. Since gasoline costs about 10 to 15 cents per mile. this represents quite an improvement.
*
How about going 100mph? The very latest electric cars can go this fast, like the Tesla:

And the Phoenix:

At high speeds, air resistance steals some efficiency from cars. The effect on an electric vehicle should be comparable to a gas vehicle - both vehicles would cost a little more to operate at that speed, but not a lot more.

Watts are a measure of power. It depends on too many other factors to really say. How far do you want to travel at 100 MPH? How heavy is the car? How efficient the motor? There are cars that can run on 5000 watts, and electric dragsters that use 45Kw. It all depends on what you want.
