It could be worse I live in Essex and most of the locals lack both!!! How rude.
No seriously I work in a school with some really smart people but some of them do not have the sense they were born with.
I just tell myself that these things are sent to try me!

yea, that sucks. My husband tells me that I'm really book smart but I have no common sense. I don't get sarcasm (I actually get really hurt sometimes because I think people are being serious, they have to say j/k in order for me to get it), I'm too trusting (so I've been told), but I'm getting my Ph.D in school psychology/neuropsychology at the age of 25 (which is probably normal...I'm not saying I'm a genius because I'm probably just average)...but anyway, after I'm done with school I'll have so much knowledge and still not enough common sense. Ask me anything about psychology, and I can tell you what I know, but if you ask me to do something that would normally take two steps (I"ll do it in 10 steps). Since I was little my mother, father, family, etc. have always said, "she's so smart, but has no common sense at all." My husband, on the other hand is smart enough to get by (a lot more average), but has wonderful common sense (street smarts as I like to call it). We make the perfect match, because we help each other out in each department!

My husband can fix anything, and is very smart on top of that. He graduated top of his class but didn't go to college (dammit, cause he's really smart!!), and can fix anything he puts his hands on. My MIL says he took their heater apart at the age of four, put it back together, and it worked. That's a smart four year old.

Now, my BIL has a masters in History and is going for another in French history, has been speaking French since he was nine, and is smart as a whip, but literally does not have the sense to get out of the rain. I tell everybody that he got so smart he turned stupid.

I've noticed this all my life the so called brains of this world usually don't have common sense.
Can't say for sure why that is but maybe, when passing exams and studying they just remember the written fact's IE: stick to using memory, where as common sense is usually spontaneous, instant simple to the point solutions.
Sorry I'm not brainy there's no facts to this lol
So I'll use common sense and leave it at that lol

no, it's not just you. people who are very smart think on a completely different level than the normal populace. they can't relate and automatically understand what we might consider a normal task, but they can look at a math problem for example and automatically be able to find the answer. your husband just doesn't think the same way that the normal population does. at least he has social skills, a lot of really smart people are unable to communicate with people who aren't as smart as them.

My husband is the same way. He has a masters of theology, but OMG! He is very absent-minded! He once put the tea kettle on the stove and went out to mow the lawn! Thank goodness, he didn't burn the house down! Just my good copper tea kettle was in ruins!
