People almost always get this wrong and I'm always having to explain this to my aunt b/c she forgets everytime I explain it.

Ok here is the answer.
You and Sally are first cousins.
Your daughter and Sally are first cousins, once removed.
Sally's son and your daughter are 2nd cousins.

It's based on a generation platform. If you hold the same generation level--both children of the relations, you are 2nd cousins. If you are removed a level (would have to say My mom is her cousin) that's how you got Once removed. Which of course holds true that your granddaughter and Sally are first cousins, twice removed.

I think your first cousin once-removed is a cousin by marriage. Like on your partners side.

second cousin is yourr 2nd generation blood cousin and 1st cousin removed is your 1st cousin by marriage?
