The actual state is a well kept mystery on the show. It is thought to be in kentucky or possibly missouri. Matt groening did use a lot of names from his home town of portland oregon in the show.
The location of the fictitious town of Springfield is never revealed. Whenever they locate the town on a map, for instance, we never see the map. In the "Behind The Music" episode the state is mentioned but there are several versions of the show, each with a different state name (including Kentucky and Missouri), to keep the not-revealing-the-location-of-Springfield joke going.

That's always been the joke. The most significant Springfield locations, in order, are MA, MO, and IL (the state capital), but the state where the show resides remains a mystery.

It's also the location of the Guiding Light soap.

Lots of states have towns named Springfield but the most well know one is in Missouri. I don't know if that's where the Simpsons are supposed to "live", though.

To the 1 that said the most well known Springfield is in MO...I'm going to have to disagree considering our (Illinois) state capital is Springfield.
Only think I know Springfield, MO for is that the Bass Pro Shop's headquarters is there.

They never say. They can't and because the State can't exist. Seriously think about it. Name a State with a Springfield that is bordered by a Shelbyville and has a West Springfield(that was what like the size of Texas in that episode).

There is a Springfield in every state, that is the point. It is every state! They have never revealed what state the Simpson's live in.

According to the Simpsons Movie, the four states that border Springfield are Ohio, Nevada, Maine and Kentucky.

it's undetermined, we will probably never know. Every state in America has a Springfield. Actually if you took the time to sit down and go through the episodes you can rule out so many of them. i.e. NY, NJ, AZ, etc.

They deliberately don't tell us what state Springfield's in. There's pretty much a Springfield in every state, though.
