Has the post-war period in the UK witnessed a ‘crime explosion’ or a ‘data explosion’? Discuss with reference to the chief advantages and disadvantages of official crime statistics.

What does it mean by data explosion?

They are asking if crime itself has risen (crime explosion) or only the perception of an increase in crime (data explosion), due to the faster and more thorough dissemination of news these days through TV and the Internet.

In other words, if someone thinks that crime is worse these days, is it because a) crime really has gotten worse, or b) crime is the same as it's always been, they just hear about more of it, so to them it seems like an increase, but really isn't.

Sudden encrease on the data to the extent that the data cannot accommodate the rise!
