A very broad question, but an easy way to start might be to outline something like the following and fill in the gaps with relevant information:

1. Purpose of the report (e.g.: overview of today's global widget market)
2. List no more than three key objectives (e.g.: Review 1996 and clarify what 1997 has in store for us)
3. Go through each of the key things to consider, which provides a logical (and simple) path to an obvious conclusion:
e.g.:
a) Review current widget situation (include key indicators).
b) Review market situation (e.g.: competitors, consumers, etc.)
c) Identify issues (pros, cons and opportunities)
d) Make conclusions and recommendations

I hope this helps.

It is a statement of the current situation in relation to the target/s set.
You can present the information in a written format or a statistical one or a combination of both.

simple eg for reference if you were reporting on a trip to the supermarket.
You would detail the aim (to buy the weeks groceries)
You would detail the amount spent, what it was spent on
You would detail any specific events or difficulties(such as parking) that made the task more difficult.
You would then analyse the presented data in accordance with the overall target. eg Total spend against budget, total time taken against anticipated time to do the task etc.
From this you would produce recommendations on how to improve the task on future occasions, (eg better planning) and in what way.
Also advise how much you anticipate it would save or earn the company if they followed your recommendations.

A report simply sets out the facts about a situation.

If say it's a report on your job, or the business say, simply jot down all of the facts that best describe current activities and progress and link it with some factual commentary.

Keep it tight and precise so it makes for straightforward reading. That is always inpressive.

I can't believe you got a job that would require the writing of reports, without knowing what one is.
It's an update in detail about the project you're working on, or an overview of the one you've just finished.
You probably don't know what an overview is...buy a dictionary.

what is a report? it's researching an issue. are you supposed to make recommendations? be thorough in your research and have peers review your work if possible before submitting it to the boss.
