C3PO (the gold colored humanoid whiney android) and R2-D2 are the same robots from before.

They were included for some continueity and also because they were popular characters. I guess Lucas wanted to give them some backstory. C3PO had his memory wiped at the end of episode 3. R2-D2 kept his memory. I think that it was because he was more trusted than C3PO.

The only people who could recognize them would be Darth Vader and Obi Wan Kenobi. Obi Wan recognizes R2. He may have recognized C3PO but did not mention it. Darth Vader never encounters R2 in the next three movies. However, he is in the same room with C3PO in "The Empire Strikes Back". However, since the protocol droid was a fairly common thing, he may not have even noticed that this protocol droid was the one that he had built as a child. Still, I think it is pretty silly that Darth Vader(Anakin Skywalker) build C3PO. There was a segment on "Robot Chicken" that dealt with this and some of the other revelations in the Star Wars series.

well, Vader wouldn't remember them, because his memory was being clouded by Palpatine who needed to keep Vader full of hate in order to keep him under control. I would have to reason that Obi-wan didn't remember due to old age. Those are the only two who had direct contact with the droids, so you could say that the others had no reason to remember becasue they hadn't met the droids yet.

The real reason for all of this is the order in which the scripts were written.

George Lucas plotted the basic plot of the entire saga way back in the 70's. Back then, though, the only part of the story that he really concentrated on, and went into detail about, was the latter half of the story, episodes 4, 5, and 6.

The prequel stories weren't written until some time in the late 90's. The result of this is continuity is all jumbled up.

C3PO memory has been erased. The only people who would know them is the Lars' and Obi Wan. No body else that saw the droids in ep.4 would have ever seen them. They don't really explain why the Lars' doesn't recognize them. Ben would of course but would not benefit from telling anyone he did so he kept quiet. As far as R2D2 goes C3PO states that R2 knows Ben.

the main reason is that Star Wars 4 was the first of the moives made. They Proboly didn't have a plan to who built c3po at that time.
they were consontrating on making the moive and then the other moives.
the order they were made was.
Star Wars Episode 4 (first made)
Star wars Episode 5 (second made)
Star Wars Episode 6 (third made)
Star Wars Episode 1 (forth made)
Star Wars Episode 2 (fith made)
Star Wars Episode 3 (final one made, though im pretty sure that they originally planed to have a few more)

The droids have thier memories wiped. And Obi Wan Kenobi is the only one who should recopnize them and he is old, there are 18 years between episodes 3 and 4.

They erased their memory, just like they destroyed most of the bots and such from the first three. It was a cheap attempt to tie up the loose ends. Really pretty pathetic though and it showed that Lucas put no thought into the prequals when it came to the bots. He just wanted to make things look fancy and take advantage of the new computer power.

If you listen closely at the end of episode 3, they say that they are going to have r2d2 and c3po's memories erased to protect the location of Luke and Leia. That is why they have no recollection of the true identity of Darth Vader, that Luke and Leia are related, or who obi-wan is. I just recently had to figure this out for myself also.

Yeah, at the end of Episode 3 Captain Antiles is ordered to erase C-3P0's memory. R2-D2 retained all his memory, he just couldn't say anything to C-3P0. OB wan Kenobi knows R2-D2 and knows he has to help princess Lea, But it would do no good telling Luke what is actually going on....Luke hasn't seen the first three episodes yet!!!

Its actually kinda simple ( not to be insulting), but I grew up with these movies:) R2D2 and C3PO have been in it from the beginning, but things have changed dramtically since the beginning. True, Anakin Skywalker built 3PO, but 3PO never actually witnessed the conversion from Anakin to Vader. SO he wouldnt know Vader built him. Hope this helps:)

yes their the same robots. the fourth movie is after anakin (Darth Vader) joins the dark side, the Jedi's no longer keep the peace in the galaxy, view it as if a revolution had occurred.
their memory's have been erased (although how they remember each other is far beyond me), and go in separate ways.
