You can make a BartPE disc and boot to it. It's like a mini operating system. You even have a look alike Explorer which you can use to offload the data to a different medium.

Do you get an error message? Blue Screen? Or Nothing happens and the screen just stays black? Do you see the Windows XP logo?

Yes, you have a problem!

Most laptop makers these days do NOT provide install disks... only RECOVERY disks that wipe the hard drive and replace it with the factory image...

If the data on the machine is super critical, I usually REPLACE the hard drive before resetting the image, and hook the old drive into a "shell" casing that allows access via a USB connection...

This allows the new system to retrieve data from the old drive until it can be discarded, reformatted, or recycled...

In the future, you might want to consider an online backup service to prevent such data loss! Check the reference below for info in that regard!

ok as far as getting your information out you can easily do this by buying the following:

a 2.5 inches usb external enclosure

you can get this at a local computer retail store, it cost between 15-30 dollars.

you will need to remove the hard drive from the laptop and install it into the external enclosure.

you will need to connect the external enclosure to another unit via uSB, for example a desktop

it will appear as a removable device just like a flash drive, open it and get the information you need oout of it.

after all the info. you need to get is out of the hard drive you can try to repair, restore or even buy a new one to replace it if you want. but at least your information will be out of it and you can put it back into it if you get to repair it of purchase a new 1

hope it helps
