Many women do NOT have textbook cycles. Therefore Day counting may not be helpful. If there is a delay in conception, day counting would not be able to help you pinpoint the cause either.
I highly recommend charting your fertility signs. Your chart can tell you when you are fertile, when you are not, when you are ovulating, when to expect your next period, and when to suspect pregnancy. Your chart can also tell you if there are issues delaying conception or causing difficulty w/ carrying a pregnancy and if there are serious issues which need a doc's attention.
Some good sources for charting your fertility signs: Fertilityfriend.com (free software as well as a pay-for version and on-line charting turorial); ovusoft.com (discussion boards for many fertility related issues, much info on fertility after the pill, and a very good software for purchase). The books Taking Charge of Your Fertility (associated w/ the the ovusoft website and software), The Art of Natural Family Planning, and Garden of Fertility

You start counting from the first day of your last period. Day 1 of your cycle is the first day of bleeding (not spotting).
You can chart your temperature using a basal body thermometer (they sell them at pharmacies), which can help you detect when ovulation has occurred. You take your temperature first thing in the morning, before getting out of bed, after at least 3 hours of sleep, and at the same time every morning. There are sites, such as www.fertilityfriend.com which help you track your temperatures. When you ovulate, you will see a shift in your temperatures. This is the only way (other than a progesterone level test) to determine if you've ovulated.
If you chart your temperature for a few cycles, you will get a feel for around what days you ovulate. Textbooks say day 14 is when a women usually ovulates, but everyone is different. Some women ovulate on day 12, some don't ovulate until day 23 (or even later).
Hope this helps!

You count from the first day of your period. If you have a 28 day cycle you would 'typically' ovulate at around 14 days before your next period was to start though. However, everyone is different. People have different cycle lengths and not everyone ovulates mid-cycle.
To make things easier maybe try charting your basal body temperature, or buy an ovulation kit that will tell you just before you ovulate. But remember not to take the fun out of the trying! Good luck!

Count from the first day you started your period and you generally ovulate 14 days before you expect your next period. So, if your cycle is normally 28 days long, you shoudl ovulate around day 14. If you have a case like mine where your cycle is usually 32 days long, you would ovulate around day 17 or 18.

It's important to count from the first day of FULL FLOW of your period - otherwise it can throw off your charts. On average, women ovulate between 12-14 days after the first day of their period. However, it's different for everyone. One way to really understand your cycle is by charting basal body temperature (BBT). Check out http://www.fertilityfriend.com for free charting.

Day one of your cycle is counted as day one. If you have 28 day cycles, then about day 14 you ovulate. You should have sex just before ovulation for the best chances of pregnancy.

Day 1 of your cycle is the first day you're bleeding. You ovulate ten to sixteen days before you menstruate.
