Actually no, not exactly, though some try to approximate it . . at least what they THINK it looked like.

You see, the original SOURCE of the famous Phoenician dyes --both Tyrian purple (a red purple) and an indigo (purple-blue) dye -- was the shells of two types of Murex snails which appear to be extinct.

Indigo was used then and is still used. It can make any blue color from light to purple.

Yes it is and relatively speaking, it just as expensive today as it was then.
