I tend to stick with Premier Travel Inns as you know what you are getting! They are pretyy basic, but clean, comfy and safe.

Also, it might be worth taking a look at EasyHotel (By Stellios, found of EasyJet) - it is incredibly basic but will be the cheapest you can find in London!

There are Express by Holiday Inn locations all through Greater London, which are consistently clean and pleasant. The ones in Central London can be pricey, but if you're willing to take a short tube ride you can find quite affordable accommondations. I've stayed at the Express by Holiday Inn--Wimbledon, which is right next to the Collier's Wood station on the Northern Line. It's about 25 minutes to downtown.

Try a local tour company ( coach) in your area. They do some great packages and you get to stay in top class hotels at reduced rates. I have just been in London for the weekend and stayed 2 nights at the Tower Hotel for £143 including return travel from the North and a tour of London inclusive. The hotel was "to die for"

Not sure how much you want to spend, but I'm very picky on cleanliness so I only stay at a few places:
The ParkCity (South Ken)--excellant hotel
The Royal Garden, Hyde Park--clean, but getting older
The Carlton Towers, Knightsbrige (good, if you get a deal on lastminute.com)
Whatever you pick, you absolutely should goto http://www.tripadvisor.com and check the 'real' reviews and candid photos of rooms taken by guests.
As a general rule, if a hotel's website (or Expedia, or Yahoo) doesn't show a picture of the room and/or the bathroom, you should stay away.

The Ibis hotel beside Euston station is perfect, your next door to everything and the standard is quite good for the price.
