It sounds like you will need to reload the operating system, because you either have a virus or corrupt files. Go to www.kubuntu.org and order their free Cd, then install it on the compter. You will be free of the Windows problems and have a CD if you ever need to reload the os again. You see, even tho Windows charges big bucks for their license, they often dont even give you a CD when you buy your computer through one of the biggies like Dell or Hp. Pay less and get more with Kubuntu.

I cant remember if ME has a "load last good" option in the F8 menu.
The idea of "safe mode" is to allow you to remove or modify the offending entry in the registry or to retore a backup of your last known good registry. (you did do a backup didn,t you? - ah well nobody else does either)
Last resort, put your ME setup disk (or recovery disk) in the drive and boot up the machine from the CD and chose "repair Windows" option if available, or a full installation if not.

I would say the easiest way is to run the restore cds that came with the computer. If the computer is that old it's probably time that was done anyway get rid of all the junk that's been installed on it over the years.

Windows ME was the *worst* operating system ever released by Microsoft, and is no longer supported by Microsoft. Your best bet would be to obtain Windows XP (or Vista, but I doubt the laptop is capable of that) and install that on the laptop.
If that's not an option, you'll probably need to re-install Windows ME.

go into the safe mode and look for the file restore
or click on start, click on run, type in
restore
and it should come up with a calender type screen, click on a date thats the oldest and it will start to restore from that date.... i hope
if that does not work you will need to reinstall window ME from the CD ROM DISK
hope this helps

Do you have those system restore discs that should have came with it? If so run those. You will probably lose all your saved info-but it should reboot the system and get it back up and running again.
