It is a whole number greater than 1 which cannot be expressed as the product of two other whole numbers both greater than 1.
Mathematicians are quite happy knowing what prime numbers are, but they are sometimes not good at writing English, so a "definition" of a prime number can turn out to have loopholes which allow 1, or 0, or -7. Some definitions are so badly worded that 3 would not be a prime, because -1 * -3 = +3. This is a problem with English, not with prime numbers.
