SSR in your form is a timed period of constant silent reading. This does not allow for any discussions (which can be really good, deep and informative discussions) during this timed period. You will find that the students will not read, they "fake read" or day dream during this time.

As a 4 year veteran of Reading, I highly suggest reading Are The Really Reading. I have read this book and it has inspired me to vamp up my SSR. The author highly recommends changing it to 2 days of Self Selected Reading (emphasis on Self Selected- letting them read whatever!!!) and 2 days of Self Selected Writing with at least one read aloud. I have modified this for my class to be one SSW and 3 SSR days with Friday being the Read aloud. I don't read an entire novel but excerpts from different ones each Friday to give them a taste of books they may not be familiar with.

Time set aside for students to read in silence. They must read and cannot do anything else. The good thing about it is that students each get to pick the book they want to read. I think it is a good way to encourage reading for fun. With the initials SSR I have heard it called Sit-down, Shut-up and Read :)

another key part is that what they are reading is not school related. Don't let them read for other classes. If you do, make sure they do not view your SSR as a study hall, but a chance to read for...fun.
