Or do you agree with me it's just an ego driven favoritism excessive, elitist 18th centruy French party?

Honestly, if Bono and Greenday wanted to make a statment of saving Katrina victims, they could have shown the dismantling of the Oscars before it was presented and watched the vast amount of money saved applied to not only Katrina victims but, feeding all of Americas hungry and educating Americas children.

Very interested in people's views on the Oscars.

I completely agree.
It has also turned into a political statement as of late (just as the Grammy's have).
Its turned into a personal soapbox for celebrities, most of whom have a high school diploma or GED at best, to rant about political injustice while they go home to their 20 million dollar mansions at night.
Also, the voting for these movies and individual awards are voted on by other actors/directors/producers, so its not a true representation of what America likes, its what the other people in the industry saw as good.
That being said, it is a popularity contest at best, and a political statement at worst.
Just look at the film that have been honored in the last 2 years.
Al Gore's global warming rant, a film about gay cowboys, Mexican films. Not to say these films weren't worthy in themselves, but when you have these films being honored with multiple nominations and awards, it becomes suspicious.
We somehow have to throw Mexico a bone, and the gays, and acknowledge global warming, etc etc.
Its very ego driven as you say, and also makes me think that Hollywood believes its job is not to entertain America, but to teach and educate the ignorant American masses, kind of like a stern parent and a petulant child. Thats the egotism that I can't abide by.

Those award shows are basically a bunch of pompous, clueless snobs congratulating each other for furthering their "Rich and Famous" lifestyles.

I can't even watch the bunch of wankers any more.

I think so.
All I saw were WASP's getting and giving awards.
All this talk about diversity, and how everyone is here represented. It came off as rubish.

Awards are for children, to reinforce good behavior. I think Oscars are just childish
