Well, he said he was sorry.
That seems to be all it takes for Dems.

I hear it mentioned all the time. there just doesn't seem to be an consequences associated with it. Apparently, it was a henious act on the part of Trent Lott to state that Strom Thurmond was a part of American History because he resigned from the Democratic Party and became a Republican when he recanted his racist ways, but Byrd must come with some sort of immunity. Heck, have the highways and parks in West Virginia are named for Byrd, which always struck me as a little absurd considering that West Virginia took an anti-slavery stance when they split from Virginia before the Civil War.

People do, at least on this board. It's irrelevant as it was over 60 years ago and he has spoken out against the Klan since then, on numerous occasions.
I don't know why many conservatives on this board don't allow for personal growth. A persons views can change as they grow more mature. Byrd made a mistake by joining the Klan at a young age, during a time very different from today, and has both regretted and recanted it. What else can anyone ask? To keep harping on an issue like this is just petty when you consider more important issues that need to be addressed now.

No, you don't hear too much about that. Why isn't anyone talking about the ex-president of the Virginia chapter of the ACLU being arrested for possessing violent child pornography either? I heard it ONE time, the other night and that was it. So what happened? Isn't THAT huge news, and if not WHY not? Pretty telling isn't it?
We need to get rid of all the the creeps and degenerates on both sides of the aisle.

Well the big difference here is that Sen. Byrd has aknowledged his mistake and has moved on to do his best for this country. Strom, on the other hand never apologized for his race mongering (being the hypocritical father of Essy Mae that he was), and Trent Lott was basically giving voice to the innate racists tendancies of the republican party which is why THEY forced him to step aside. In addition, Tom Delay wanted to make his grab for power, so he was instrumental in getting Lott to step down. There's actually quite a bit of manuevering inside the Rep. party, it IS politics afterall.

A perfect picture of a "lib-turd", being supported and wiped clean by his constituents. Liberals will always continue to stain the moral fabric of society today, with their acceptance of malicious and grotesque acts.

197,
It's just more evidence of the liberal bias that controls the major networks. A democrat is forgiven for ANYTHING...philandering in the White House (clinton), forgiven...being a Klansman (byrd), forgiven...murder (kennedy), forgiven.
You don't hear about it because the liberals are always trying to dig up baseless crap on conservatives. Well, they got what they deserved last time they pounced on something without looking...forged Military documents implicating the President...for shame! That move got rid of a big-time liberal sycophant (rather), and I enjoyed seeing it happen...
It won't take long before they start stepping on their own cranks again...election time nears. I'm going to enjoy watching the dems implode.

The Democrats don't like fake racists (opposers of Affirmative Action), but real racists are perfectly OK. It's one of those weird Democrat things, like that Clinton lying under oath is fine, but Bush saying what he believed to be true but was actually false is grounds for impeachment.

it doesn't really matter,it is a past mistake. politicians from both parties used the klan at one time to launch political career. dems and repubs in WV support him because he is a politician that represents the will of the voters. strange is the fact that thurmonds ancestors owned sharptons ancestors

yes, it's unbelievable to me as well. is he that idiot that rambles on and on in the senate, spelling out words and sounding like he is senile? I heard a little bit of it on the radio and I think they said it was Sen. Byrd.

Actually it gets mentioned all the time by Conservatives. It is ignored, downplayed, or outright excused by liberals. All you have to understand is that if you are a liberal, you can do no wrong in the eyes of most other liberals. They are great at calling everyone who doesn't agree bad, but have an absolutely dismal record of holding their own accountable in any fashion.
