The same as any other, your wanting to help is the first step in the customer service experience.

If I were you, I would look at the patron when I speak, not the interpreter. The interpreter could easily be replaced, but the customer would remember you regardless.

This is a little difficult to answer as I don't know the exact context of the conversations. Most South Africans have a fairly decent knowledge of English. It is taught as a first language in most of our schools nowadays. The interpreter would probably just be filling in some gaps.
