Actually we should work together to get out of the mess over there. Yes, it was a Republican lead Congress and a Republican President that got us into Iraq, whether justifiably or not we are there and we need to be out. Wokrking together will help our Republican friends save face. Oh we can trot it our at election time. Just to jog memories. That will keep the Republican party the minority for a decade or two in Congress and maybe even though 4 Presidential terms. By then the neocons should be totaly void of power and mainstream Republicans can regain power.

I think the war was the right thing to do. I think that those who say Iraq was never a threat somehow think that time would be "frozen" and Iraq would never be a problem. I can envision a scenario where we didn't go into Iraq and just focused on Afghanistan, and Iraq got involved on the other side. (If Osama worked with Reagan, why wouldn't he work with Saddam?) And then the Democrats could have said "why didn't Bush address the problem? He didn't connect the dots! He's a wimp, like his Dad!"
YES, there are big issues with the concept of preemption. Maybe America is just not willing to do it, although if there's a cease-fire and subsequent violations, then either we have to enforce the treaty or tell the world we won't. I remember in 1991 when the troops went home after the Gulf War (I), my thinking that they would have to go back.
I think there are many justified criticisms of the conduct of the war.
I still think it was the best course of action available.
I would be happy to say that Bush and his fellow Republicans should get the credit/blame for Iraq up to this point. It's possible that the Democratic congress will also be held responsible to a degree for what happens going forward.
He who has power also has responsibility.
I do not expect the Democrats to come up with a plan for Iraq. But not having a comprehensive alternative opens them to the charge that they are just contrarians and will damn ANYTHING Bush does - very unhelpful in a time of war. Asking what their plan is is a way of smoking that out. Largely I hope they stay out of the way! I know we disagree. :)
Again, I would be happy for Bush and the Republicans to get 100% of the credit. Or blame.
Time will tell if the Republicans, and the Democrats, are happy with that arrangement.
PS I would note that a far larger number of Democrats than Republicans have not "take[n] responsibility for their actions," by repudiating their vote on the Iraq War resolution and somehow blaming Bush. Many of these people were warning us of Saddam's WMDs well before Bush even ran for President! That fact makes your question somewhat ironic, does it not?

What "failed" war are you talking about? The US Military has won every engagement with Saddam's army, captured and demolished the Baathist Socialist Dictatorship over the people of Iraq, and instituted a democratic government in its place. The Iraq war is over, and it is won.
People seem to forget the tactics of the HLC and operation werewolf that led to terrorist stikes well into the 50's in occupied Germany, or that Japan was not truly unoccupied until the end of the Korean War. Winning the peace takes time, and I reccomend Clausewitz for a good read on the policy implications of "winning" the peace.
Now, in regards to winning the peace, that is something that is a legitimate complaint against both the congress and the president. It is not the fault of the dems or the GOP....it is the fault of the American people for not electing representatives to our government who are willing to work together to achieve victory. The GOP is more concerened over claiming victory because of its ideas, in the belief that people will reward them at the ballot box. The Dems are more concerned over preventing a GOP ballot victory, and hence are willing to chop off their nose to spite their face.
A wise member of the House of Lords once stated that "All people have the government that they deserve." The problem we face in this nation is that our federal government has gotten so isolated from the people that politicians care more about the culture of celebrity than they do about the substance of their actions.
It is not up to anyone but the people to take responsibility for the actions and inactions of our government. It is time that, if we are to have a two party system, that we remove all incumbants and replace them with new people. It is time that we take control of our local politics and embrace the actions of our local governments. MLK said to think globally but act locally. He understood that to change the world on your own is impossible, but to change enough small pockets one at a time with enough people helping you out will enact the change you desire.
I doubt that I will receive the best answer from you, as it seems that you desire what St. Augustine called the first tier of rhetoric, that is the preaching to the converted tier.
May God bless you in your endeavors, and may God Bless America!

i'm certainly shocked that Spitzer resigned. many times, a Republican will renounce contained with regards to unethical habit (Foley). The Demcorats even controlled to get delay to renounce consistent with their witch hunt. Democrats, on the different hand, look into scandal and unlawful habit as the thank you to advance thier political careers (Frank, Hastings, Jefferson). you extremely could look into data in the previous posting, so which you do not embarrass your self.

Both parties are f'n sick and perverted.
I hate both of them so much because they both betray America. Maybe instead of wondering what color name tag they wear we should worry about WHAT the f'n man/woman in office DOES! NO ONE in govt takes ANY responsibility anymore for anything and it makes me wanna puke in my soup.
Both sides boted for war based on the HORRIBLE intel given to them. Repubs refuse to say die and wanna just keep sending troops on over until the end of time. Dems want to leave.
We SHOULD leave for these 2 reasons 1) We're CREATING more problems by staying there and messing everything up, making more enemies as we are seen as invaders. 2) 5 Years now..time for Iraq to stand up like a big boy.
What are we trying to do? Make all of them eat bacon and wear baseball hats?
Instead of worrying what is best for the people, country and the troops we keep pissing+moaning about party dogma.....f'n disgrace

How is this just a Republican war?
I thought this was an American war.. or are you admitting liberals aren't American?
You seem to forget Democrats voted for this war as well.
Democrats only hate the war now because it's the popular thing to do.
Why aren't you worried that democrats can't man up and ever stand for anything? Instead of constantly changing like the weather.

The last politician to pay for anything was nixon. What makes you think that any of our modern day public servants are going to slit their own throat by
1) Owning up to mistakes
2) Stopping corruption and party politics
3) DOing their job by doing what is best for the American people.
Good Luck on your quest

No they will never take responsibility. They are probably right now trying to figure out how to blame in on Clinton. That is when they are not lying and saying the war was a success because we "freed the Iraqi people from a brutal dictator and gave them democracy"
They accuse the Democrats of not having a plan, yet I fail to see how the Democrats should need a plan since they are not the ones that got us into this mess.

Republicans will take responsibility if something turns out good. But not for any failures. Republicans need to live under the delusion that they are perfect. So beg all you want. They will have no mercy. It's never the Republicans fault. Just ask any Republican.

It seems the Dems do have a plan: leave.
That the GOP and the Dems plunged into this war is a condemnation of both parties. If you want to sit back and think the Dems blameless in this mess, continue deluding yourself.
