Right click on my computer select properties, when the window appears select the hardware tab. Then select Device Manager.

Do any of the items listed have a yellow exclamation mark next to them. Specifically in the "sound and game controllers section.

If your computer is otherwise running normally right click on this item and select disable.

Restart the computer the problem should have disappeared

You couls also first try on the start menu click run and type msconfig then click ok.

Select the startup tab.

In the startup list look for a program to do with audio and remove the tick from the box next to it. then restart.

This may also cure the problem.
