At least now days (in the US), people acknowledge that there are gays, and more and more people in the news are openly gay. In my day (several generations ago), it was never talked about, it was treated as a mental disease, and any gay socializing was confined to bars, bathhouses, and public restrooms on the freeways. One high school principal even held a press conference to assure everyone that there were NO gays teenagers in her high school! Now, several high schools have support groups for gays, and every city has a PFLAG chapter.

Unless the area is predominantly gay, it's not a welcome sight to see same-sex couples holding hands anywhere. They will be abused, likely, and parents will shield their children's eyes. In the workplace, public displays of affection (PDA's) are out of place anyway, so that's usually not a special issue.

In sports, it depends on the sport, but most reject homosexuals, at least publicly. The military is opposed to gays, but then all of the arguments they present are identical to the ones they had against Blacks, until President Truman ordered them to integrate. As they learned from that experience, familiarity breaks down barriers.

Confusion reigns regarding what it means to be homosexual. The majority of the straight world only knows what it sees, so it believes being gay only means wanting to have gay sex. They haven't a clue as to the physical attraction behind it or the affection, or the aversion to opposite sex coupling. For many, it's like they're physically incapable of comprehending, so no amount of logic, comparison, or reasoning gets through to them.

It's better than it was, but there is a long way to go yet.

Well, in my society (Canadian) I have little problem being who I am or walking down the street holding hands etc. Of course, as with any society, you always get your naysayers and idiots but for the most part society here has slowly and steadily come to accept the rights, responsibilities and freedoms for gays.

Mirror that with what happens south of our border in the US and it's a totally different scene. Bashings are more regular than Americans want to admit and of course you have states which are doing everything they can to eradicate any gay equality. Add to that a Religious zealotry that is consuming the political landscapes like a Texas brush fire and you begin to understand. Add to all this the most recent spew of venom to come from one Mr. Hardaway and you really get to point.

A Gay In The Society!

Thank you Sally, I'm going to write that screenplay! It's a brilliant title. I'll credit you at the Academy Awards.

Yes, Sally, it is hard to be a gay in the society. It is so hard in fact that at times you just want the society to stay our of your business. It is hard being born into the society, being schooled in the society, stepping out of your private life and into the public life to work within the society only to be reduced to less than a man by that very society that you struggle through daily.

We are just like anyone else, we go out in public to participate in the world then we go home to our private lives. We never abandoned the society, why has the society abandoned us???

Today, it's easier than it use to be. People are a little more open minded, but there is still far to go. Although there are more places where people are open, there are still the gay bashers and bigoted zealots who deny our right to exist in today's world
