Because some Hindus did not approve of the props he was suggesting should be given to Muslims in the Hindu-Muslim conflict during Partition.

Why was Ghandi shot by his own people?
Ghandi's killing was no different than John F. Kennedy's, no different than Malcom X's, and no different than many other leaders who were killed by their own people.
