It is the amount of cylinders in the engine. Each cylinder has a piston in it and at the top of the cylinder is the spark plug. When fuel is sprayed into the cylinder from the injector the spark from the spark plug ignites and a small explosion occurs. This is combustion (internal combustion engine). This process happens hundreds to thousands of times per minute. This is why ou need clean oil for the pistons to move easily in the cylinders and good spark plugs and wires for proper combustion to occur. And you want good gas that will help the fuel delivery system and injectors stay clean.
Depending on what your needs are a 4 cylinder car is better on gas and may be able to do the job. For a good 4 cylinder that is safe and good on gas I would recommend a Subaru or Honda.

a 4 cylinder engine, has 4 cylinders, while a 6 cylinder has 6. goto http://www.howstuffworks.com and type in engine, it will show you pictures of the internal parts of an engine. Depending on the car you get, most of the time a 4 cylinder engine is your best bet, fuel economy wise.

4-cylinders have less power and better efficiency (burn less gas)
6-cylinders have more power and worse efficiency.

if you want a car that is good on gas, then go with the 4 cyl.
the thing with 6 cylinders is that it doesn't take much to get going quickly because the bigger the engine, the more power and speed.
also a small car will almost always have a 4 cyl. engine
a 6 cyl is found in midsize cars like a camry, maxima, impala, taurus, etc.

It's part of the internal combustion engine. The cyl has 4 cylinders , 6 cyl has 6, 8 cyl has 8 and so on! The cylinder provides the combustion force that gives you power to make the vehicle move. (in simple terms you can understand)

you have 4,6,8,and 10 cylinder cars and trucks engines. A cylinder has a piston in it that goes up and down to make the engine run. The more cylinders you have the more power.but less cylinders you have the better mileage. hope this helps
