I published a book online last year through AuthorHouse and have had difficulty getting payment for books that I know were sold by a book store in Arizona. Author House told me several months ago that I would receive a check in February. I still have not. Now they say I must reapply -- and the amount they mention is far less than what should be due to me.

Do two things, check your contract and make multiple attempts to contact them. The biggest thing is that you shouldn't lose your cool. Honestly, these companies know there are harsh consequences to cheating you out of your royalties. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen of course, but they can't afford to face lawsuits all the time.

Check your contract to see a stipulation on how your royalties are changed by discounts. If they sold the books to the store in Arizona at a discount, then you may lose some, if not all, of your royalties off of it.

Request documentation of the sales. If they cannot provide it, they are breaking the law. In which case the contract may become null and void. If they cannot, or will not provide this, then contact the Better Business Bureau and a lawyer.

Best of luck to you, but I caution you, keep your cool because you can ruin your industry contacts in a hurry if you piss off the wrong editor because they job hop so frequently. Just because your publisher isn't big (i don't know if they are or not) doesn't mean they won't go to bigger companies and leave a bad name for you all the way. Imagine if they just share an email about you with their industry contacts. Just stay calm and go about the chain no matter how long it is.

Good luck to you.

Also report them to Predators and Editors so other writers aren't taken in.
