Hi there! You need to be very careful to get a good night's rest the night before and watch what you eat during the day. If you eat a very heavily starched lunch, like something with a baked potato for example, you will get the sleepies early in the afternoon. The reason for this is that starch can take awhile for the body to break down, so your blood will be rushing down to your stomach area to convert your lunch into energy, meanwhile draining you. Breads, muffins, bagels, buns, pancakes, crackers, popcorn, cereals, pasta, rice, potatos, squash, corn, baked beans, peas and canned beans are all examples of starchy foods. You CAN eat these, just in moderation during the day, and just be aware of what you eat so if you always get the sleepies after eating a certain food you can eliminate that on work days.

For those days that you can't get a decent sleep or just get the yawns, try bringing a water bottle to work with you and drinking lots of water throughout the day. Coffee is always a good waker-upper in the morning, but eventually its effects will start to wain off. Also, here is an exercise or two you can do at work. They are actually yoga exercises, but work great in an office too where you are limited by time and space. Stand up, and with your feet comfortably seperated at a normal stance, reach up as high as you can with your palms facing away from you. Then put your hands together, so one palmed hand is in front of the other, and bend down and reach toward your toes. Really stretch your arms and back muscles, but only to where you can stand it and back off if you feel any sharp pains. Hold for a count of 10, then slowly come up to your regular stance. This exercise will really help to refresh you no matter how tired you are. If you have been sitting in front of your computer all day and your eyes are tired, try this one. Imagine there is a huge clock in front of you, and keeping your head straight, move just your eyes to the "12" position on your imaginary clock, then the "3", the "6", the "9" and back to the "12". You can also reverse this and go counter-clockwise. You really want to stretch your eyes, so really force them to look in the different directions. Good luck to you and hope these help!

Go for a walk and make a coffee and think about staying awake. Or talk to friends on the phone or at their offices so that you can waken up and liven up a little before going back to work!
