Everything goes into the canals, which is why they're so disgusting. Do NOT take a swim. The canals used to be cleaned naturally by ocean currents, but construction projects and dredging have altered this, so everything is now polluted and stagnant.

Any rain run off and general street spillages these go into the lagoon. Foul waste such as sewage, from many areas is mostly pumped to the mainland. There are some houses and islands where septic tanks are still used. These are emptied on a monthly basis.

What goes into the lagoon tends to be gray water, from sinks, showers etc.

Most hotels have to pump their foul waste to the mainland. The cost of the initial pipe set up is one reason for the higher bills.
