LOL, I do have an Acer, but it's close to the $2000 mark than the $400. It has the dual core cpu with 4g of DDR2 memory (not sure if you can ge tthat in the US, I got the memory in China) integrated 100mps a/b/g wireless, bluetooth, 3g, etc. etc. etc. The biggest drawback is a lack of serial and parallel ports, that and it chews through batteries pretty quick (I get about 7 hours on the upgraded battery, about 3 on the stock one)
Before you completely disregard this one, I do web design, desktop publishing, movie editing, etc. and have never had a problem. It will render a full length dvd quality movie in 30-45 minutes, or I can have every adobe program open and doing things at the same time with no noticeable slowdown, this while using emule and utorrent to download things and a virus program running in the background.
Oh yeah, and I do a little light gaming as well. :)
Good luck

I like HP for the money. The dv9000z might cost more than what you want to spend though. I ordered it from Hp and it cost $3200
with tax and everything including rebate.
I got a lot of options that made it cost more though. You could get it for a little over $2400 if you don't get all of the high end options.
It has the AMD Turion Dual Core TL 64 (2.2 ghz)
17" wsxga bright view
NVidia Go7600
2048mb ddr2 (2dimm)
HD dvd rom with the supermulti double layer
it has the Roxio creator premier v.9
100gb x 2 7200 rpm hard drive sata
it has the vista ultimate
and 2 high capacity 8 cell batteries, and a lot of other stuff along with the 3 year warranty for damage and everything.
I looked at Dell and Gateway, but they don't compare and don't offer the quality support that HP does.
None of the others like Toshiba or Acer even come close.
It is better than my old desktop I had a year ago before I got a new one. Yes, it is HP too.
If I had the money I would get an Alienware laptop, but that is a few more thousand. Too much for a laptop.

Dell 1501 (AMD dual core TL-56, 1GB RAM, DVDRW, 15.4 WXGA...etc). Was £650 (about $1000).
Pro's: Nice matte screen (not glossy thank god, that glossy finish does my head in!), 5+hours battery life, heavy but therefore sturdy, widescreen, quick as a bullet
Cons: Its a laptop, so its bound to go wrong sooner or later!
