Typically, white collar workers work in an office environment. Blue collar workers work in a factory. Blue collar work can also be outside the factory, such as construction, electrician, plumbing & c.

The distinction also applies to white collar as supervisory position, and blue collar as laborer, for example, a policeman would be blue collar, his immediate supervisor might still be blue collar (if he or she performed patrol functions), or might be considered white collar (strictly supervisory).

white collar wears a suit and tie...ie office worker, business personal.

Blue collar wears a uniform...ie bus driver, mechanic, plumber.

However, I am white collar and make 25k a year and lots of blue collars pull in 60k...no indication of wealth.
