First baby usu sally around 20 weeks, it should feel like a flutter (butterfly wings) or like a like worm wriggling. After that the movements will become stronger each day until they are actual kicks. In late pregnancy sometimes the baby's arm or leg digs into you and you have to slowly push baby back because it can be quite uncomfortable, but really it is all FANTASTIC, the whole pregnancy (sickness and all). Good luck and enjoy each day now and after baby is born.

The term quickening is an old-fashioned one and is used to describe the time in pregnancy when the mother starts to feel the baby moving.

An average time is around 18-20 weeks, although once mums recognise the sensation they may be quicker to notice it in subsequent pregnancies. The baby is, of course, moving around from much earlier on, but its small size and the relatively large amounts of fluid in early pregnancy make movement hard to notice.

Some women don't recognise the sensation until a bit later, so don't worry if you don't know what you're expected to feel. By 24 weeks you should definitely have some idea. The initial sensation is like a fluttery movement in the lower abdomen (similar to wind) and later, as the baby grows, the whole range of stretching, kicking, head butting and wriggling can be felt. Your partner may also be able to feel the movements if he puts his hands on your tummy as you lie down.

Babies vary, some being more active than others, and also, as the baby grows there's less room to move about. If you haven't felt your baby move for a day or so see your doctor or midwife who'll either do a doppler monitor for the heartbeat or arrange a scan, as decreasing activity can be a sign of problems.

I have just had my first baby, and until I felt definite kicking I worried like mad. It is such a scary time.
Get as much rest as you can. Make sure your whole house is tidy and ready i.e. all your D.I.Y. You won't fancy it later on.
I didn't prepare the nursery/ wash baby clothes until a few weeks towards the end of my pregnancy (I wished I had also filled my freezer with home cooked food, I thought I would have had time to cook....you don't!).
To me, Kicking felt what can only be described as a water pistol shooting on my skin at 20-24 weeks (maybe earlier... I forget now). The midwife said this wasn't kicking. But as the feeling got stronger I realised it was the baby. It is odd, as the baby kicking feels very natural (not as bizarre/ odd as I thought it would). Women feel kicking at different stages. Some don't feel it at all!
I was told I should have had my hospital bag packed at 32-34 weeks. There are some good websites around to help you.
Don't buy too many baby clothes. Buy a basic pack of vest and a 5 pack of baby grows (plus a cardigan, mittens, hat, socks). Leave the outfits for other people to buy. Plus you don't really want to dress your baby in anything else for the first month. I had newborn outfits still with tags in!
Nothing can prepare you for those first few weeks when the baby is born. It is so so so tiring. But it is so worth it when your baby gives you a smile.
Good luck

you will most likely feel your baby move until 18-22 weeks as it is your first. later as the baby gets bigger the movements will have you jumping every few minutes. what I mean by this is, you will be out and about somewhere minding your own buisness then your baby will give you a mighty kick and you will jump 6 feet in the air! especially the first few times. it's wonderful, and magical! people may look at you strangely when you declare wow! he just moved! don't be surprised if other people don't share your enthusiasm including your partner. He will catch up with you eventually as he starts to feel movements too! he may not feel anything for quite a while though. ENJOY! Best of luck to you. x

I started to feel the baby around 15-16 weeks. It's hard to describe is accurately. It's like you're nervous (but lower), like little spiders, like you're being tickled, or like a cat purring. That's how I've described it.

At 1st you don't know what it is, but after a week or so, you know when baby is moving. It always brings a smile to my face.

Don't worry if you don't feel it everyday, you're still early & it may not be felt every day....but a trick I read in What to Expect (& it works) is to eat something or drink something & then lay down...you should feel baby w/ in an hour or so. - this was a tip at week 19 so you're still early yet!

It's pretty exciting, isn't it?! I'm pregnant with my second and I'm 18 weeks now. I've felt the baby move since about 16-weeks, but with my first, I didn't feel her until around 20. It's so darn close to the way gas feels moving through your intestines at this point!

Usually, though, the baby is pretty low in the abdomen and you can feel little thumps.... usually consistently in the same place. When they get bigger, you can feel elbows and knees in all directions! Enjoy :)

Anytime now and for me it felt like lots of little butterflies or many tiny bubbles popping. I loved it! Of course as baby grew and started to kick me in the ribs, it was a whole different story, however still wonderful. The first time you can make out a hand or foot through your skin is the most magical thing ever. Enjoy and many congratulations.xx

na, its lovely. i ran crying next door when i first felt Lilly move cuz no one was in my house to tell!!! so sad. oh..thats another thing, ur hormones r guno kick in pretty damn soon, making u feel weepy for no apparent reason until u get 2 my stage; crying at the end of a cuppa. as soon as u have ur 20 week scan get some breast pads!! not long after my 20 week scan and i started leaking from me boobs, also light tops are a bad idea. get a non-under wired bra now. i learnt the hard way why pregnant women shuld not wear under-wired ones...BLOODY HURTS!!!
never be far from a loo. always make sure u kno where they are cuz when u get 2 about my stage, lil one can decide to be highly annoying n kick the hell outa ur bladder strangely hard n u think ur guno wet urself...only 2 have a dribble.
get sum coco butter or the like to aviod stretch marks and start applying it now b4 ur bump gets big. and say bye bye inny belly button. although mine is STILL an inny, most ppl's r out by my stage. mine only out when baby pokes it out.

dont panick, you dont normally feel the baby move untill you are at least 20 weeks, sometime it will move a little when it is around the 18 wk mark but do not be alarmed, between 20 and 22 weeks you will feel your baby kick and turn round

good luck
i hope you have a beautiful baby
