Having a clinical abortion in the first trimester of a pregnancy (which was still legal this morning when I checked):
The clinic may require you to bring someone with you to transport you home from the clinic.
You'll be greeted with courtesy and compassion by staff members, then escorted to a briefing room. If you were not referred to the clinic by your doctor, you'll be asked a serious of questions in an effort to determine stage of your pregnance. You'll also be told what you can expect during and after the procedure, and you'll be counseled on using effective family planning in the future. You'll also be given a prescription for antibiotics which you will need to start taking after the procedure to guard against infection.
You'll then be escorted to an exam room where you'll disrobe from the waist down. You'll then lay down on the exam table with your feet in the stirrups. Next, a speculum is placed inside the vagina to keep the vaginal walls apart. The physician will hold the cervix, the opening to the uterus, with an instrument called a tenaculum. The physician will then insert a series of narrow metal instruments, called dilators, into the cervix to open it slightly. The physician will then use a slender suction cannula to remove the pregnancy from the uterus.
(This is where some clinics and gyno offices differ) The pain that one experiences (the physical pain) is a result of the cervic dialating and the cramping can be very painful. Some clinics will use a local anesthetic to reduce the pain during the procedure. Some clinics may also use a "laminaria" which is a thin stick that it inserted a day before the procedure to gradually dialate the cervix.
When the procedure is complete (about the same period of time that it takes to perform a standard annual gyno exam), you'll be escorted to a recovery room where you relax for an hour or so, sometimes with a heating pad on your abdomen. Generally the staff will check in on you often, counseling you on pain management and gently discussing possible grief counseling options as well.
Approximately one hour later, barring any complications, you'll be free to leave. Over the next 10 days or so you can expect bleeding and the type of cramping that would accompany an extra heavy period.
You will return to the clinic two weeks later for a post op exam.

It is a medical procedure.. they go in and scrap the uterus and unfortunately kill the baby in the process and sometimes can be a harsh on the body. After the uterus is cleaned out it will contract some and go back to normal. Then you should wait to have sex again for at least 6 wks becoming pregnant again is very easy. Always use some sort of protection on both parties. Abortions are not a birth control and should only be used in a Life or Death situation. A DNC and abortion are alot alike, but with a DNC the baby died of natural causes and you are not killing it.

It mostly depends on how far along the mother is.
It can range from scraping a few cells off the wall of your uterus, to coercing early labor and killing the fetus as it is born.
It is an unconcionable form of birth control, since there are many different ways to keep from prevent preganancy in the first place. Though I support a womans choice to have an abortion, especially in cases of rape, or when the health of the mother is at risk.
Unfortunately young people (and some that are older) refuse to educate themselves as to the risks they are taking, and instead listen to the myths propagated by their friends and others who are ignorant of the facts. Combine this with an effort in this country by religious fanatics who preach 'abstinence only sex ed' which has been proven to be an abject failure, and you end up with massive numbers of unwanted pregnancies.
Personal responsibility is the most important factor, and it is sorely lacking in this country.

well....I am not sure if this is a real question......but I am guessing you are asking about how an elective abortion is performed - the physical details. It is usuallly a D&C - basically the entrance to the uterus is opened a little and an instrument is inserted to scrape out what is inside.
The woman can either be under a local or general anesthetic when it happens. It is not all that pleasant, but does not take long to recover from.

All of these anti-abortionist giving answers... so here is one that is not leaning to either side:
If you are under 3 months (when it is legal):
"The surgeon sucks the embryonic tissue out of the uterus with the aid of a syringe. Another procedure is known as Vacuum Aspiration. The surgeon numbs the cervix and then expands it. The surgeon then inserts a hollow plastic tube in the hole and empties the uterus."
All surgeries have risks and benifits, and it is up to the individual person to weigh what is more important.

An abortion is the removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus, resulting in or caused by its death. This can occur spontaneously as a miscarriage, or be artificially induced by chemical, surgical or other means. Commonly, "abortion" refers to an induced procedure at any point during pregnancy; medically, it is defined as miscarriage or induced termination before twenty weeks' gestation, which is considered nonviable.
Throughout history, abortion has been induced by various methods. The moral and legal aspects of abortion are subject to intense debate in many parts of the world.

for somebody who's clinically determined with cancer and desires existence-saving chemotherapy, which might probably kill a fetus besides, abortion is probably a "sturdy" factor. Or as close to to being sturdy as abortions can get besides.

Abortion is murdering an innocent baby. The baby actually gets destroyed in pieces in the process--not trying to be graphic but that is what happens--I have seen pictures and it's awful. Please don't do it if you are pregnant.
