If the car turns over, it is not the battery or starter, so the next items to check are spark or fuel supply. One effective way to check to see if it will fire is to take a can of Berryman's B-12 carb cleaner (spray can), and spray a 2 second burst into the air intake on your car - have someone hit the starter and try to start it. If the car fires and runs momentarily, you have a problem with the fuel supply. You would then check the fuel filter and/or fuel pump or fuses to the same. If the car does not fire, you likely have problems with the ignition. In this case, you will need to enlist the help of someone who knows what they are doing. In this instance, it could be the coil, the electronic ignition module, a blown fuse, or several other things that could cause it not to fire. I would check all of the fuses (under the hood and under the dash) to make sure that it isn't something obvious before having it worked on. That way you know what to expect in the way of repairs. Good luck, and I hope it is simple.

Is it a back up set of keys? There is a safety feature on many newer cars that requires a key's microchip be encoded with a special code allowing the engine to start. If it is not properly encoded your engine will start and immediately (due to the security feature) kick off. This, I am betting, is your answer. If you get a VIN # a dealership probably can find the pass code and reprogram your key. This might be 30 dollars or so... good luck...

RE:
Car will not start, but the engine turns over.?
My car won't start, but when I turn the ignition key it sounds like it wants to start. I'm assuming this means that its not a problem with the battery being dead. Any ideas?

Depends....I've had this problem 3 times. 3 different cars.
1st car was timing.
2nd car was timing jumped because a balance shaft belt broke.this smashed all the valves down one side of the DOHC.
3rd car was just plugs and wires.
To find out if its wires try to start the car with someone in the dark, you should be able to see light bt the wires if there is 1 or more bad wires.
Out side of this you may need to get someone with a timing gun just to check.

why do people ask these kinds of questions without stating the year, make and model of the car !!!!!!
engines need 3 (main) important things to work: fuel - spark - air.
therefore:
check the fuel
- (empty, bad fuel, fuel pump, computer)
check the spark
- (spark plugs, leads, distributor, rotor button, coil, timing, computer)
check air
- (air filter, AFM: air flow meter, computer)

PCV valve check to see if you have any oily residue on any of the air intake manifolds sensors or on the IAC valve. this will cause the engine to dump fuel into the combustion chamber and flood. if you are getting what sounds like a combustion at the vary beginning of you trying to start the car and it turns over then a combustion sound then nothing but the starter its probably flooded. this is a safety when to much fuel to air is found nothing bad happens car dies or idles ruff if to much air to fuel is found it can blow engine. so if you have oil around the air intake sensors and the IAC the engine dose not know how much air is coming into the combustion chamber so the engine dumps fuel into the combustion chamber to keep the engine from blowing up flooding the system and then no worky worky
before replacing that make sure the security light is not on if so youtube security light reset it takes ten minutes sitting in ACC mode and then you turn the car to off then start.
it still could be fuel pump or relay but PCV valves are vary cheap and take only a few minutes to replace + time to clean oil off sensors and IAC port.

This sounds painfully obvious, but I notice no one mentions it - Check the starter. Have it tested. You may have worn planitary gears inside of the starter, so it SOUNDS like it's trying to turn over/turning over but it's not able to catch.
