An addiction is any pathological relationship with a mood altering substance, experience or behavior that has life damaging consequences. If your relationship is with a substance and people are telling you you need to stop, then you are experiencing a life damaging consequence. It is damaging your ability to have and maintain inter personal relationships. If it is an experience or behavior, you need to look at what that behavior is doing for you and to you.
One important thing to remember about addiction. It is the only disease/illness that actually tells the one afflicted that they don't have it. It is a disease/illness of denial. A selfish method of holding on to a behavior that may seem to the user the only solution they have and blocking any insight into other alternatives. The addicted mind will intellectualize, rationalize, and justify why the one addicted needs to, or has the right to continue what they are doing all the way to death.

Addiction is a chronic disorder proposed to be precipitated by a combination of genetic, biological/pharmacological and social factors. Addiction is characterized by the repeated use of substances or behaviours despite clear evidence of morbidity secondary to such use.
Addiction can be anything from drugs to the Internet. I am addicted to Yahoo Answers. i have to come here everyday. That doesn't mean I am a bad person. we all have an addiction to something or another, certain foods we have to have everyday, sports we have to play or watch everyday. Workaholics are addicted to working are they bad? No we call them greedy because people think they work to make more money when in fact they are addicted to work.

Chemical addiction is an imbalance in the brain. You become addicted to, say, meth, because your body actually craves more of the drug.
Addictive behavior, such as using the word "like" over and over is often learned and can be stopped using will power.
The conditions are very real, not suggested or manufactured by a third party. It not mind control by another person.
Sounds to me like you just don't want to admit you have a problem . Its always easier to blame someone else.

An addiction is something you can't stop. It does you harm but you make up excuses that make it reasonable to do. If you weren't addicted to whatever it is you do.. you might be sound enough to know you have an addiction. If you do something that does your body harm.. you should stop. you might think you will be able to forget the experience.... but your body wont. it will want it again. it has a stage in your mind. it will play out all your dreams to make u want it more. the solution to all your heartache. the want for it hurts.... hurts really bad.

Yes. I think a lot of people, especially spouses, use the word addiction for your hobby because they want you to spend more time with them! Or maybe they are just jealous that you enjoy your hobby so much and they don't have anything they enjoy as much like you do.
But if you are talking about drugs, alcohol, porno, etc. etc. you are looking for an excuse and that's Wrong to Anyone Else!!!

Stop lying to yourself. If you're addicted face it. They tell you this because they love you and care for you. Only you can decide when to quit being in denial and admit the fact that you need treatment. Until such time, they can harp until the cows come home, you will always deny it.
