hi tee!
here are a few pointers which should help answer your questions:
1) films are made and produced in the hope that it will attract large audiences
2) the concept of genre is important because it attempts to offer a certain type of pleasure to the audience
3) if a film comes from a particular genre which is very popular, it may result in other films makers coming up with other films of the same genre
4) genre is a way for audiences to understand and recognise certain types of films
5) films will show certain characteristics or codes and conventions, mise-en-scene, depending on what genre it is for it to be classified. for eg, westerns would have guns, cowboys, saloon, is set in the wild west, cowboy hats etc for it to be classified as a western
6) the film industry relies upon genre when deciding what films ought to be financed and receive publicity
7) genres exist merely to establish, attract and enable different audiences to understand the films, in a way in which enables them to decide for themselves what types of movies they like to watch
8) it's not so much about the conventions/iconography, rather directors and writers will only use some conventions to base their films on
9) genre conventions are used to help inform the audience what type of film it is, as opposed to on a basis of a be-all, end all telling of a story
10) genre itself is often a problematic term, simply because there are certain film types which are not established in the film world as actual 'genres'. for example, we have western , sci-fi, horror, romantic comedy, but categories such as black films and asian flicks, as well as gay and lesbian movies primarily are often not categorised and of which are not considered actual genre films. therefore, gay and lesbian movies would most likely be under the romantic 'sub genre' category, whilst black films are either action, drama, romance, comedy or it might have elements of all 4 of them, and asian films are mostly martial arts/action. otherwise, they are all separate categories and these films are specifically targeted towards minority audiences within society

as for target audience for romantic comedy, i'm guessing predominately female, white and perhaps black as well, aged around 15 up until mid 20s so it's mainly for teen girls
