After I've browsed for a short while in Internet Explorer, I find that the windows stop loading any pages; every window I have open suddenly takes ages to load anything, and when it finally does it is the 'cannot display webpage' screen. I need to quit all the windows and start from scratch, and the the pages load fine again.
My pc is on XP and is only a few months old with no other issues.
I am not willing to switch to another browser; i want to fix the problem with this one.
Any suggestions?

If you want to stick with IE upgrade to IE7, don't have too many windows open that uses memory and slows the computer to a crawl, the can't load page appears because it times out because of the slow response of the computer, closing all the windows frees memory, try emptying your internet cache click tools >options on general tab under browsing history click delete to empty the cache

These may help.
1. Try cleaning your registry with CCLEANER (its free)
2. Tools (top of the page), internet options then click on delete cookies, then click on delete files, click the box DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT before u click OK.then click on DELETE HISTORY...a box will pop up and click on the appropriate section
Hope this helps....
