Proper 80's Ska? Maybe you're talking about the tail-end of the two tone second wave where punk got mixed in, or maybe the scent of the third wave 'punk-ska' generation, but either way, ska is ska, and it's all proper. If you want strict ska, go Jamaican, but if you're among the many of us who were first exposed via British and American punk/ska acts, go for The Madness, Pietasters, Skatalites, Toasters, and so on.

Well, 80's ska I guess I would have to say the Specials. But my favorite ska band of all time are The Reel Big Fish. First band I ever saw live, with Goldfinger. But I saw the Specials once. Good show. (If you wanna classify Operation Ivy as ska, I would say they are better than the Specials, but only if you wanna)

Sorry to be a nerd mate, but the 80's was the ska revival. By the way , my mate was bass player for Bad Manners in their heyday. They were fun.

Just go with the Skatalites. That's the only proper ska.
