It depends on when you last had sex. If you had unprotected sex less than a week ago or even less than 10 days ago, I doubt that a test would turn up positive yet. However, if it's been a few weeks since you had sex, I don't think you're pregnant. Tests are pretty accurate by this time (e.g. 47 days since last period). What the tests do is measure the amount of pregnancy hormone in your urine. The further along in your pregnancy that you are, the more hormone you emit. Now, some women don't produce as much hormone in the first place, so if you are one of those women, a test might still show up negative even if you are pregnant. However, most women are not like that. You might read about that happening a lot on Yahoo! Answers, but it's really not as common as you might think.
I guess I'm just trying to tell you that if it's been a while since you had unprotected sex, you're probably not pregnant. It's not uncommon to be late occasionally. In fact, it's not uncommon to totally miss a period! I recently skipped mine and I know I'm not pregnant. I hadn't had sex! So it's totally normal.
Now if you start missing periods consistently, then you should go see a doctor. There might be something seriously wrong.
If you're still concerned and your period hasn't come in a week, take another test. You can also go to your doctor and get a blood test. They're not necessarily more sensitive than the home tests, but they are more accurate and they can detect the hormone earlier.
Good luck! I hope you get the result you want.

You could still be preg, if you've had unprotected sex....or even with protection. It IS possible to get a "false negative" on a home pregnancy test, so try again in a week or so, and if you still get a negative result, you should call your doctor and see if you can have a blood test done.
Good luck!

I would go get a blood test done to determine if you are pregnant. They are more accurate. Is it possible you are going through menopause?
Good luck.

maybe you're not pregnant and just on an irregular cycle?
Have another test to see if the first one was innacurate.
