Early comers... the nod goes to bands like Moss Icon, Rites of Spring, Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is The Reason. Bands that took from the punk, hardcore, and early indie movements and took it in that direction. When I think of the mid to late nineties, I tend to think a lot about Jade Tree, Equal Vision, Revelation, and Doghouse. Get Up Kids, Saves the Day, Elliott, Chamberlain, Promise Ring, 11:11 and so on.
These days it's harder to judge. What's been called emo, I'd be more likely to judge pop punk. What they call screamo doesn't approach what I know as screamo. There's plenty of good bands within this modern generation of "emo", but they're not what I identify as being EMO. Thing change though, and we can't always remain sixteen years old. Then again, Lifetime just released a new album, so maybe there's hope yet.

The Early November, Dashboard Confessional, some Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Thursday. Thats just some that I classify as emo. But jesus god in heaven, Fall Out Boy, AFI, and Panic at the Disco are not emo. I'm really getting annoyed at people saying they are.

ok for the last time people FALL OUT BOY and PANIC AT THE DISCO are NOT emo!
emo isnt a genre. its a subculture. it was the big thing in the late 80's and 90's, an underground scene. but nowadays emo is considered the kids who wear black and sit with sad eyes in the back of class.
emo is:
taking back sunday
senses fail
hawthrone heights
the promise ring
jimmy eat world
saves the day

Basically any band that names their songs whole sentences.

Hahah, 'you people'
You are such a music snob. I don't even have to hear you speak one word and I know that this is so. It's people like you who have ruined it, and you know it's true.
Don't deny it. Embrace your thick-rimmed glasses and side swept bangs.
Silly boy.
