I don't think so. Tourism in fact helps to spread knowledge of a culture to a wider audience and to greater appreciation. It also helps to immortalize or perpetuate certain aspects of a culture which would have been lost with modernization if nobody is interested in them anymore e.g. tribal or aboriginal ways of life.

Although commercialization and cross-cultural influences come in through tourists,we must understand that we are in an ever-shrinking world and this is inevitable. Hence, our government and designated cultural organizations must do their part to preserve as much of our culture as possible. However, in doing so, people must not become too engrossed in preserving their own culture to ignore all the others.

Tourism is a two-edged sword, it can promote acceleration of loss of cultural identity, but it can also promote culture conservation. It depends on the community's approach / agents’ philosophy what is going to happen. Mass tourism does not necessarily help, and eco tourism has been abused. It is a fine line between conservation and commercialisation of culture... But in general I’d say that tourism promotes the conservation of cultural idiosyncrasies: once they have a money value, the communities start exploiting it. Why do you think in Thailand the religious festivals are so big and colourful? They draw tourists and foreign exchange; it is not all about religion any more! On the other hand, take Sabah and handicraft: why is there virtually no indigenous Sabah handicraft: well, it never got any ‘money value’, the locals were told their stuff is primitive and worthless already a hundred years ago, to a point where there are now very few people left who can craft beautiful cloths, or woven bags etc. In summary I’d say tourism in Malaysia can help promote cultural diversity and cultural identity, so much the more as people are proud of this diversity. The government might have other agendas that might cause much more damage to this cultural diversity…

Does Malaysia's government want to "erode its culture" with tourism? Truly Asia. Visit Malaysia in 2007!

It really depends on how you view it. With tourism, everything becomes commercialised. Items once considered of cultural or religious significance is mass produced or worse stolen (in the case of the Angkor Wat) and put up for sale. Everything has a price tag, from the services provided to the ever present smile of the waiters and locals. Everything loses its meaning doesn't it? However in the case of certain places, for example Bali, Indonesia, the arrival of tourism has had a positive impact on Balinese culture. The youths see a future in learning how to dance and carve etc. Less are leaving the island (and their culture) behind to seek professional jobs in the cities. I suppose it really depends on the examples you are looking at and how tourism is managed in the country. Hope this helps.

They're doing it the wrong way, they should be promoting the culture, not build some silly 80-floor building over a heritage site, stupid. Look how the europeans conserve their old buildings, it doesn't matter if that building wasn't occupied Mozart, they still preserve it, so tourist can take photos of old buildings without some stupid shopping center blocking. What will tourists think about malaysia if they had no idea about its culture? They'll think, workaholics, lousy drivers, stereotypical inner-city people. pssh? whats the fun about that? you see that in every country. That so called 'Floral' parade was a waste of flowers & money. Oh yeah, parades are illegal expect when organized by governments, boring!!!
