Astonomers speculate that in a couple billion years, the sun will go through a "red giant" stage. Then this happens, the orbits of mercury, venus, and possibly earth will be engulfed. That will be the "official" end of the world. Now, whether or not humanity has managed to annilate itself by then is up for debate.

***ADDED INFORMATION: After turning into a Red Giant, the Sun will collapse in upon itself somewhat, becoming very dense, and white hot. This is the "White Dwarf" stage. The sun will be running on borrowed time, until it can no longer generate enough energy to keep fusion going. The materials will start to cool, and the Sun will turn into a Black Dwarf, and be dead.

Don't lose any sleep over this. These cosmic disasters aren't scheduled for a few billion years.

As the Bible predicts, yet not the way the churches describe!
God tells us everything we need to know about it, but various churches who Claim to know him, have many varied ideas on this & many other Bible subjects.

The World itself is will not end.
Earth was made for a Purpose that is yet to be fulfilled ...

"[God] has founded the earth upon its established places;
It will not be made to totter to time indefinite, or forever." Ps 104:5

Humankind in it's entirety will not end either,
as it has a Fundamental part to play in the God's Purpose for the Earth.

What Is God's Purpose for the Earth [& Mankind]?

However, individuals & organizations of mankind who are Out of Harmony with that Purpose ARE going to be brought to their ends. ...

They have been Warned, & Invited to change their ways, much as God used Noah to warn those of his era, & warned Nineveh through Jonah. Because Nineveh as a whole truly repented, they were not destroyed. Likewise, those today who listen to the warnings & become harmonious with God's will, will be accepted by God to live in the promised paradise Earth, just as Noah & his family survived the Flood ...

EDITED in for skeptics:

"Science and religion [are] no longer seen as incompatible."—The Daily Telegraph, London, May 26, 1999.

Althought he Bible isn't a science book, it stated as fact things that science hadn't proven yet ... centuries in advance of that proof ... That's not a chance occurance!

If you're looking to the Bible for real-world answers to scientific questions, then you are barking up the wrong tree, my friend.

The Earth will be around long after humans are gone.

For the life of me, I can't see how religious people here like vivian feel qualified to answer anything in a scientific forum.

A meteor or comet impact, a nearby supernova, a supervolcano, nuclear war, a super viurs, a nearby merging neutron star binary (it doesn't have to be that nearby, actually), a runaway greenhouse effect (like venus), a magnetic pole shift, solar flares, ice ages, nuclear winter, a wandering black hole, invading aliens, killer tomatos, geneticly engeneered man-eating monkeys, or something else completely unexpected. It would be even worse if they all happened at the same time.

The world will end when the sun expands into a red giant destroying Earth. I do not think the Bible's version is correct.

No one knows for sure. But some ways are ice age, if the suns burns out, and the world can end 5 or 50 years after global warming happens.

There are many ways. One is the end of the mayan clock on december 21, 2012, in which on this year the sun is believed the worst sun storm yet. Some believe that all volcanos will explode. The article in time (or macleans...?) states that our extinction is soon.

Read, please 2Peter 3:9-10. I rather go with the Bible. Its that we are closer to that prediction than the scientists'. Remember, they are not the creator but the created. They can be wrong but the Bible alone can't! Their predictions are theories based but the Bible is from God's.

SOME say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

are you asking about the planet or humanity? the planet will be around another 5 billion years or however long until the sun devours us...humanity will be around a significantly less amount of time...we'll suffocate in our own filth and the planet will reach out and strangle our puny little throats. nature laughs last, always
