No, you can get TMJ at any age. It's a genetic thing...
It would be a good idea to get the mouth guard anyway, because it has a way of reducing the amount of pressure put on the jaw muscles.
Also, do you chew a lot of gum or soft candy? If you do you might want to cut back a bit and give your jaw a rest.

TMJ generally comes from stress. I've had it, my mother's had it. My mother used a mouth guard because she kept grinding her teeth as well. I didn't have so much of a problem with that, I just clenched my jaw muscles a lot when I was under stress. A night guard might help, but it does depend on if you do clench your teeth when you sleep.
I wouldn't say it's abnormal at your age, it can happen to anyone.

No, it isn't abnormal, and TMJ is what causes that clicking sound you hear.
Really you have no way of knowing whether or not you clench your teeth when you're asleep. Trust your dentist, I think he knows. The night guard will help, and if you do not use one, you will regret it later. Jaw and teeth pain like you wouldn't believe. You can even retrain yourself so that you won't have to wear the mouth guard after a while.
Good luck

My canines will do this after licking/smelling something like pee or a useless animal (yuck), or once they lick a decrease that yet another canines has. fairly weird and wonderful, yet i know what you're talking about. you also can see the muscular tissues bypass on suited of their head, too. they are going to chatter and click besides the undeniable fact that it in many situations stops after some seconds. seems type of hilarious for the quick era of time that it lasts :-D
