Caves are the houses built by nature, mostly on mountains. In the beginning of civilization, human beings used caves for dwelling. Civilization began when people came out of caves to construct their own house and live in the plains. After that caves were used as hiding places for thiefs, kings and monks. The Budhist monks in India have the decipline of spending the 3 months of rainy season in-doors. Caves were their natural choice for this. They spent this time in decorating the caves with beautiful drawings. Ajanda and Ellora caves are examples.
Caves are interesting to study for the geologists. There is lot of folk lore about caves in India.
