I know Reagan seems to be a god among conservatives..
But personally i didn't care for him and his policies.

President Reagan didn't "trash" anyone during his visit to Japan. What's wrong with a former President acepting speaking engagements at whatever rate the market will bear? He was a capitalist, remember? Do you suppose Clinton speaks for free?
As far as "setting the stage for the current crisis", I'm afraid you're looking at historical events through today's moral prism. This is a classic mistake. Keep in mind that there was a Cold War between the Soviets and the Americans at the time. The Mujaheddin in Afghanistan were willing to fight the Soviets. By definition, anyone who wanted to fight the Soviets was our friend.
Further, Saddam was the lesser of two evils when compared to the Ayatollah.
I'm sorry you apparently cannot grasp these facts, but they remain the truth, regardless of whwether or not you like them.

His popularity is a measure of the shallowness of the public. They don't care about reality, just give them a handsome face and they are happy. His policies were horrible. His supporters say he brought down the USSR. Nonsense, the Russian people did that themselves. Reagan did arm Afghanistani insurgents, that was the beginning of Al Qaeda and modern Islamic terrorism. But the public doesn't care--Reagan was handsome. Thats all they care about.
