No. As soon as he was appointed Chancelor he granted independence to the Bank of England. This meant that he was no longer in charge of monetary policy and the Bank of England was responsible for low inflation and interest rates. Gordon is quick to take the credit for decisions taken since that day by others. How quickly would he take the blame if the Bank creates a recession?, No, Gordon is NOT responsible for the UK economy as a whole, but just for taxing it to the edge of depression.
This means that ALL Gordon Brown does now is raise too many taxes on the profits of UK Plc, and then badly mis-spend the proceeds and that is ALL he does. OK, he has a lot of time left over for plotting and scheming, but he is too much of a coward to even do that properly.
As for the longest running period of growth, this was started under John Major in 1993 (4 1/2 years before labour came to power) and continued by the banks after labour took over. Labour also kept to the tories 1997 spending levels for a further 2 years because they were to scared to fiddle with the economy they inherited.
The banks have used debt as a mechanism to create growth. It is not growth borne of production, nor from excess manufacturing, but of re-mortgages, re-financing and credit cards. Gordon Brown has done NOTHING to reign in the massive over borrowing of this nation.
He is an egotistical weakling.

All I have seen him do is increase taxes and run and hide when anything major comes along.
He is the only one who knows how the tax system works...when he moves on..the whole economy will come crashing down around our ears.

Yes he has. He has had a hard time as a parent, he is experiencing life on the coal face just as we all have to. He may be a politician but he is a father, a husband and a taxpayer, so he deserves some respect. Oh, he has also managed the economy for the longest sustained period of growth too. Whether he should be annointed as the successor in Number 10 though is a different topic all together, but I think competition is healthy.

Absolutely. He has presided over the UK economy at (arguably) its time of greatest success, stability and wealth. The best Chancellor in living memory and we all owe him a big vote of thanks.
