let's say you are trying to convert 5600 nanogram/ml to gram/liter

1 gram= 1 billion nanogram, so 1 gram/ 1 billion nanogram is equivalent to 1, and then
1 l = 1000 ml, fraction 1000 ml/ 1 l is equivalent to 1.
write

multiplying the two fractions above by 5600 n/ ml will not change the value you are trying to convert, so
multiply them:
5600 ng/ml * 1000ml/1l * 1 gr/1 billion ng
when you write the fractions in the traditional notation, you will clearly see that ml's and ng's will simplify and then voila, the desired units
result is 0.0056 gr/l

10^-9 grams/mL=10^-9g/(10^-3L)=10^-6g/L
by the way a nanogram=10^-9g
mL=10^-3L
