it's just that a lot of superfluous Y's seem to be floating about here, in names like Jayce...

I've wondered the same thing! I know of two babies that were born in the last MONTH that were named y-variations of Abigail: Abigayle and Abbygayle. It's starting to get on my nerves.

I think it's this misconception that it's better to have an original name (can't say I don't agree with that) and the best way to do that is to 'spice up' a common name (THAT is what annoys me). Not really sure how that works but it seems to make sense to the people who do that sort of thing.

Well, think of it this way. Y is a stand in vowel. I have 4 children, and one on the way here. Lookin at this question, I see that 2 of my children have Y's in them, and 2 dont. Nor does the boy, or girl name we have here picked for the next one. But my husband and I both have Y's in our name.

So must be the vowel thing. Thats all that comes to mind here on this question.

The letter Y is used at the end of names to abbreviate them as a sign of familiarity or affection. For example, Terence becomes Terry or Frederick becomes Freddy. This is maybe indicative of our less formal attitudes towards our children.

I know what you mean. I was wondering that too. like Nycole, Jayme, and alot of other names that shoud be spelled with and "i" and they throw in a "y" which just makes the name look dumb. if its spelled with an i then why not leave it that way? your not making the name any more unique considering its still pronounced the same.

no...it doesnt make it cute...it makes it look like the poor kids mother cant spell. it looks dumb

I feel ya on this....My aunt seems to feel the need to put letters that aren't really needed in her kids names. Madysyn is one of her children but she's named some of the other Lexee(Lexi), Karolyne(Carolyn) It just annoys me

I think you are referring to the annoying names that aren't usually spelled with y. Like Cameron but you spell it camryn just to be cute (Krystyna instead of Kristina). I understand where you are coming from its annoying. When someone is trying to spell your kids name for a birthday invitation, you get mad because we spell it wrong!

It's just a different way to spell names. It adds alittle flair.

No you are imagining. The world is huge and the opinion you have may be not so large to everyone since it might be only a hypothesis. Its not so
