If you are using Windows XP, connection is simple. with your computer turned on, plug one end of the connection cable into the computer (likely a USB cable). Then plug in the other end into the external hard drive (while it's turned off). Then turn the external drive on. Windows will 'see' a device and 'talk' to it, identifying it.

Once the computer indicates that your device is ready to use...

Click
Start / My Computer

and you'll see the drive there. From that point, you can drag and drop files onto the drive, backing them up.

good luck

Most use USB. It's as easy as plugging the USB cable into the computer. Wait while Windows recognises the drive (a minute or less) and then it will get a letter, the same as your flashdrive or floppy drive.

Caveat: this doesn't work for Windows 98.

If you have a firewire drive, make sure you have the appropriate jack on your computer and plug it in. Most firewire drives come with USB as well.

There are network drives but you pay a premium for them and probably don't have one.

If the drive came with backup software, put the CD in and follow the bouncing wizard.

Go to Western Digital's website, look for your model and follow the instructions.
