Solicitors had studied very hard to know the laws and it is the reason that they charged so much even for just a matter of minutes.

Lawyers can only charge by the hour, so their total earning potential, though high, is capped. Then they spend lots of time hanging around with people whose businesses make them money while they sleep. That skews the lawyers' view of rich and poor. Not much you can do about it I'm afraid except insist on fixed charges for specific bits of work - don't do it on the meter if you can avoid it. I've done that a lot and I've saved thousands.

Most self employed people sell themselves by the hour and solicitors are no exception. Their charges are based on the overheads for the office - rent, staff, etc. as well as their take home pay

I'm currently being charged £165 per hour for something I'm sure I could do myself EXCEPT THAT, once you get to Court, if you don't know the format, you're likely either to upset the judge (bad move) or miss a salient point. Either way, the money they charge is probably well spent. Best way to avoid such charges is not to need their services, though I appreciate that sometimes inadversity is thrust upon you.

If your office overheads were £600 per day, your bill for 10 minutes of your time would reflect that. The solicitor needs a place of work, administration, indemnity insurance etc etc etc and guess who pays for it? You, the client. If you don't like it, do the legal work yourself.

Darling, I'm a lawyer, and have been working straight since five a.m. until 10:50 tonight. Believe me, even if you think a lawyer charges so much, it just isn't enough to compensate for what we have to give up in our lives to be able to serve our clients well.
And here I thought law school was the pits!

generally for 2 main reasons. 1) because you will pay for it 2) because you are too lazy to email me and ask. I will listen to your saga. then i will state: i charge $225 per hour prep and $400 per hour for trial...then I will ask: do you have a seventy-five thousand dollar retainer?........18 percent of the time the answer is no.....then I ask: do you want competent representation or do you want to win?

Solicitors are like leeches, they will bleed people dry.
Don't use them if you don't need to.

Because they think they are worth it. As John says, try not to use them if you can.
