Witchcraft or* groups that practice witchcraft (in this context, matter of semantics*) should not be confused with the formal definition of religion, where the beliefs and morals stemming from that belief are from a Divine source.
Witchcraft(ers)* is more technically a cult,
an informal religious group of individuals who follow their own self-created code of conduct.
essentially, self worship or worship of another mortal man/woman.
I imagine some have tried to classify it as a formal religion to have it protected by the constitution.
Any informal religion that writes their own bible uninspired by a Divine power or greatly alters the Holy Bible to fit their desired sinful culture would have to be considered a cult.
examples of such books are:
The Book of Mormon,
Watch Tower Tract
The Qur'an [Koran]

Yes wicca is a religion to some - have you heard of pagans? They were around before christianity - it was a religion that many followed until the christians stomped them out (nearly) & took alot of there beliefs but twisted them around believing in the earth the sky & the sea - wicca has the four corners earth, fire, water, air (just like star signs which was also taken from pagans B.C.). These days to be a pagan is to be a wicca apart from wiccas perform spells etc. If you typed in wicca to yahoo you will get many sights (which you generally have to pay for) but they will explain fully! Hope that helps your curiosity.

Gerald Gardner wrote of Witchcraft (yes, capitalized) as a relgion.
As for not being allowed to study it, I'd like to quote Aleister Crowley.
“The conscience of the world is so guilty that it always assumes that people who investigate heresies must be heretics; just as if a doctor who studies leprosy must be a leper. Indeed, it is only recently that science has been allowed to study anything without reproach.”
Studying witchcraft doesn't make one a witch any more than studying the Bible makes me Christian or studying the Quran makes me Muslim.

It depends on your definition of "religion". If you believe that all religions have a random collection of beliefs, artifacts and rituals which require adherents to suspend logic and intellect in order to worship man-made creations called (variously) gods or God, virgins, angels, prophets, the sun, the moon or even Prince Philip then yes Witchcraft is a religion. Indeed compared with most of the world's religions it is quite a sane and logical one!

there are wiccan and pagan religions that believe in alternative medicines and beliefs but its not actual witchcraft where ppl turn ppl in frogs and ride broomsticks. From what i can gather it is a beautiful religion with many of its beliefs and rituals crossing over into everyday life of everyday ppl. People are afraid of these less common ways of life because of how they have been seen through media such as t.v and film but if you do some research into wiccan and pagan beliefs you will find there is nothing frightening or unreal about it and alot of what these groups of ppl stand for makes alot of sense!

Wicca is commonly referred to as the religion of Witchcraft. Witchcraft is infused in our beliefs and we call ourselves Witches. Wiccan study is available to the public in the form of many reliable books and websites. If you are interested I will point you in the right direction.

you are nearly right the religion is Wicca it is a modern form of the old pagan religion, one of the oldest and deepest rooted in the world. There are many pagan paths, most rooted with the world tree. There are still a lot of believers and wise woman here in the UK helping with healing and such.
The site below from the BBC will tell you more, without preaching

Witchcraft is a practice, not a religion. There are religions that practice ceremonial magic in their rituals, and as such the members are witches. An example of this would be REAL Wicca, or several other neopagan religions. Also, Wicca is not an old religion. It was created in the '50's by Gerald Gardner, who claimed to have gotten most of his information from followers of an old religion. Whether or not this is true has never been proven.

WitchCraft is a system, not a religion. Wicca is a religion that DOES embrace the practice of WitchCraft.

It's actually Wicca, which is often confused with what people believe is witchcraft.Wiccans are peaceful people who get a bad rap for their spiritual beliefs and practices mainly from Catholics (who persecute everybody who doesn't believe in the same things as they do!).
